IMMATERIAL ARCHITECTURES
Museo Francisco Sobrino (Guadalajara, Spain)
Nov 26, 2021 – Jan 23, 2022

David exhibited 4 works at the Museo Francisco Sobrino’s exhibition –”Immaterial Architectures (IA)”The pieces met with the exhibition’s premise of articulating space and light in a unique way. The given space was a starting point for the builds, then, internal structure physically modulated light, and generated different luminous architectural spaces.

These works meet Rodchenko’s idea, whereby laws referencing the structural organisation of material stand universal. Based on this, structures can be scaled up to large compositions for public space. With this in mind, the exhibition employed two formats to display the works: one, the museum gallery itself and two, the exhibition’s catalogue. The works shown in the gallery were termed “models” and their large scale projection shown in the publication are termed “projects”.

The exhibition’s immersive character and the work’s sculptural qualities are emphasised with the “models”. Three factors constitute the works: the sculptural object, its internal structure, and light. Principally, the interaction of light with internal structures (modulated space), shaping immaterial architectures with infinite nuances of colour.

In “projects” the object is eliminated and the focus is placed on the exterior space and context. Looking is replaced by experiencing the work. The viewer is now an essential part of the installation and is invited to enter the modulated space to discover the most unexpected nuances of colour, always returning to the totality of the experience. These are architectural spaces because what matters is  how you move and how you look.

They are artistic proposals that perhaps have something in common with Sobrino’s oeuvre, as Marjolaine Lévy notes in her text An In-Between Approach, in that they move between literalism –the presence of the sculptural object– and illusionism –the resulting visual variations. These installations are, nevertheless, constructed with a commitment to transparency for the observer, allowing the materials, structure and process to be seen.
