The secret behind the barrel

THE SECRET BEHIND THE BARREL
Bodega Otazu (Navarra, Spain)

“The secret behind the barrel” is an artistic project for Bodega Otazu, within the framework of Genios de Otazu.

Genios de Otazu seeks the synthesis between the creative work of the plastic artist and that of the winemaker. For this project, every year an artist will be chosen to reinterpret, with his own language, the aesthetics of a wooden wine barrel. At the same time, the artist will participate fully in the wine-making process, from the manual harvest to its final assembly many months later.

Genius # 1: David Magán, 2016-2017

In its first edition, Genios de Otazu has David Magán who defines his proposal as follows:

“The great challenge that was posed to me with this project was how to bring the color of the material of the deconstructed barrels -both the exterior of the wood and that impregnated with the color of the wine- to the space and, at the same time, produce a work that is within my language and working with my main plastic concerns: modularity, chromatic fusion, light, building in space through the plane and actively involving the viewer in the understanding and discovery of the work.

The result I have reached is the creation of a kind of virtual sculpture that floats in the center of a 3 x 3 meter screen. An artwork of light that changes with the viewer’s position and that works between the limits of drawing and sculpture, of the physical and the ethereal.”
